*NEW MESSAGE : welcome to my home. i’ve been thinking of this space for a long time – a place that feels like me, where i can invite you in, a potato space. hope you’ll discover, dig around, and have fun. thank you again Clara, for building my dream house, and thank you, Théo, for writing the whispers of the house.
HaYoung is a transdisciplinary artist. They studied at the University of Seoul and earned an MFA from Villa Arson in Nice. Following their residency at the Jan Van Eyck Academie in 2024, they are continuing their project “Ph-X”, a research on the amorphous materials and identities within digital infrastructure at the International Center of Glass and Plastic Arts (CIRVA) in Marseille.
Storyteller, they weave narratives that transcend cultural, political, and linguistic boundaries, blending personal experiences with collective memories. Situating themselves in between, they observe, decorticate, and distort the algorithms of both physical and virtual societies in order to reconstruct their own voice: that of a trans non-binary person of the Korean diaspora.
Working with video, drawing, performance, data and even perfume, they create poly-sensorial installations that examine the entangled and socio-political layers of the materials, behaviors and languages. The core of their practice is (mis)translation; the zone where the transition generates the incomprehension, error, so as non-normative logics. Playing with the porosity between dual realities, HaYoung transforms one medium into another, one space into another, and one mythology into another, questioning the construction of one’s identity.
Their work has been presented at Jan van Eyck Academie [NL], Frac des Pays de la Loire [FR], International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen [DE], Foundation Pernod Ricard [FR],
La Ferme du Buisson [FR], SISSI club [FR], Secession [AT] and Het Nieuwe Instituut [NL].
They have received accolades including the Région Sud Prize at Art-O-rama in 2022, and the 25th edition of the Fondation Pernod Ricard Prize in 2024.
