When I was a kid, I had a blue ass
Drawing from the mythology of 삼신할미(samshin mémé), who slapped babies' buttocks to hurry them out of their mother’s womb (bleu marks called Mongolian spot), HaYoung questions birthmarks, both internal, external and somewhere in-between ; through bellybuttons, cardinal signs, butterflies and cordyceps.

"The sculptures in the Bellybutton series stem from the artist’s new project Ph-X. The project draws simultaneously on the mythology of glass as a material in a perpetual state of fusion and on the principles of quantum physics.
The series takes its title from the navel, the body’s first mark. Each work appears as an organism in formation: a loop folding back onto itself, a fibrous scar in which the boundary between interior and exterior becomes porous.

In the drawings from the Birthmarks series, HaYoung composes a succession of bodies alternating between fullness and emptiness. These bodies exist between the underworld and a world beyond, between what germinates beneath the earth and what rises beyond the sky. Several recurring elements emerge within the drawings: the cardinal axes, which structure the compositions and form a matrix-like body; cordyceps, a parasitic organism that generates bugs and unpredictable behaviors, disrupting systems of direction, control, and belief; and butterflies, appearing as taxidermic metaphors fixed beneath glass.

These presences shape a space that is at once primordial and terminal. Bodies being born and bodies dying are held within the same cycle. The exhibition connects the act of being born with the act of giving form, and the marks left on the body with questions of identity."
