HaYoung is a transdisciplinary artist. Educated at University of Seoul and the Villa Arson in Nice, and having participated in residencies at Artagon, the Jan Van Eyck Academie, and CIRVA Marseille, they are currently developing the project Ph-X.
As a storyteller, they seek to infiltrate socio-political and technological systems through fiction and (mis)translation. Working with video, drawing, sculpture, data, glass, and scent, they create narratives that explore the layers of entanglement between materials, behaviours, and languages.
They attempt to reach for in-betweenness where transition breeds incomprehension, error, and non-normative logics. Playing with the porosity between dual realities, they transform one medium, one space, one mythology into another, revealing the invisibilised.
Captchas, data, and Wi-Fi codes are not only raw material but characters in their tales, with their own bodies, voices, and feelings. These new forms of consciousness act as a parasitic force: dissecting and distorting the algorithms of Western-centric infrastructures, both physical and virtual.
Through rhizomatic narratives and polysensory installations, HaYoung reconfigures the vocabularies of borders to embrace our shapeshifting identities.
Their work has been presented at Centre Pompidou Paris [FR], Jan van Eyck Academie [NL], Fondation Fiminco [FR], Frac des Pays de la Loire [FR], International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen [DE], Foundation Pernod Ricard [FR], La Ferme du Buisson [FR], Secession [AT] and Het Nieuwe Instituut [NL]. They have received awards including the Région Sud Prize at Art-o-rama in 2022 and the 25th Fondation Pernod Ricard Prize in 2024.
